A little about myself…

I am a software dev with wide experience of programming languages from COBOL to Smalltalk to Java and the Web.  More recently Android and Ruby.

In my free time I generally stay on the dev tech, tinkering with Ubuntu and programming environments. These include Processing and Arduino which I find a refreshing change due to their simplicity and ease of use.

I also enjoy using Google SketchUp, including models for Google Earth. I have so far only published a few finished models (one of which was a real challenge) but have others in the works.

I guess I’m what you might call a “technical creative”,  so I like Processing for its freedom of expression and excellent graphics support.  I have yet to publish any Processing creations but this is something I’d like to do when I feel the urge.

What else?  Aside from the dev tech, I am a recent convert to the ukulele.  I feel quite passionate about the ukulele, particularly as an instrument that virtually anyone can play and enjoy.  Young kids appear to take to it so easily.  As this is such a rich topic I have started a separate blog.

Lastly, I am an atheist and have been most of my life. There are so many standpoints within atheism and I think it’s helpful to work out which one I take. My current best fit is “secular humanist” along the lines of a combination of the UK National Secular Society and the British Humanist Association. Another useful site for more info is The Council for Secular Humanism, based (I think) in the USA; they have some very good answers to questions like “what is secularism?”.

Thanks for reading.  I hope you find some of my posts interesting.

Aloha  :D
